Leprechaun Green Ash (Standard) - Fraxinus pennsylvanica ‘Johnson’
Green ash is one of the toughest street trees in the world, and this is the compact version of it: a dwarf selection trained as a standard, forming a dense, neatly rounded head on a straight clear trunk. Fraxinus pennsylvanica ‘Johnson’ gives the same heat, wind and drought tolerance as a full-sized ash at roughly a third of the size, with glossy dark green pinnate leaves through summer that turn clear golden yellow in autumn. It is the answer where a deciduous shade tree is wanted but the site simply cannot accommodate a large one.
Why Leprechaun
Dwarf Proportion: It matures at a fraction of a standard green ash, which keeps it viable in courtyards, verges and under service lines.
Dense Rounded Head: The canopy forms a tight, even ball with little corrective pruning needed.
Golden Autumn: Reliable clear yellow autumn colour before leaf drop lets winter sun through.
Hard Site Tolerance: It copes with compacted soil, reflected heat, wind and periods of drought once established.
Small Root Zone: Its reduced size means a correspondingly modest root system compared with the full species.
Ideal Applications
Verge and Streetscape: Fits comfortably beneath overhead lines where a larger deciduous tree cannot.
Courtyard Shade: Summer shade over a paved seating area with winter sun restored after leaf fall.
Small Scale Avenue: A matched row along a short drive or path for uniform structure.
Car Park and Hard Landscape: Tough enough for islands and strips in exposed paved surroundings.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a continuous canopy line
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable to a wide range of soils including clay, alkaline and compacted ground, provided water does not pond permanently
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice weekly through the first two summers to establish roots below the surface layer, after which it becomes notably drought tolerant. Mulch to the canopy edge without touching the trunk, and stake only where wind exposure demands it, removing ties within two seasons so the trunk builds its own strength.
