Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Wilga - Geijera parviflora
Geijera parviflora is an inland Australian small tree from the semi-arid country of western New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia, where it holds a dense weeping canopy of fine dark leaves through drought that flattens most other species. The habit is distinctive: a rounded head of pendulous branchlets, almost willow-like at a distance but far tougher and evergreen. It is the standard choice when a designer needs a graceful, non-invasive shade tree for hot dry conditions and difficult alkaline soils.
Why Wilga
Weeping Evergreen Canopy: Fine drooping foliage gives a soft, willow-like silhouette that never drops its leaves.
Extreme Drought Endurance: Survives long rainless periods in inland Australia with no supplementary water once established.
Non Invasive Roots: Root behaviour is well suited to planting near paving, kerbs and services, which is why councils use it.
Aromatic Foliage: A member of the citrus family, the crushed leaves release a distinctive resinous scent.
Frost and Alkalinity Tolerance: Copes with heavy frost, limestone soils and clay, a combination few ornamentals manage.
Ideal Applications
Street and Verge Tree: A proven urban performer in hot dry towns from Dubbo to Mildura and across regional South Australia.
Courtyard Shade: The compact rounded crown fits a paved courtyard where a eucalypt would be unsafe and oversized.
Dry Garden Feature: Reads as an elegant specimen in a low water native or Mediterranean planting.
Farm Shade and Shelter: Traditionally valued on grazing country as a shade tree and drought fodder species.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 7m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring, avoiding extreme summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable; sand, loam, clay and calcareous soils all suit provided drainage is not permanently poor
Establishment Care: Water deeply every week or two through the first two summers, then step back completely, because wilga performs best when it is not pampered. Mulch to 75mm, keep the trunk clear of turf and competing grass, and resist the urge to prune, since the weeping habit develops on its own.
