Overview & Specifications

Ghost Bamboo - Dendrocalamus minor
Each warm season Ghost Bamboo sends up fresh culms dusted in white powder, and pale new canes standing among older ones are what give the plant its name. Dendrocalamus minor comes from southern China and builds outward slowly from its base, adding new culms each year. It is planted where a tall evergreen screen is wanted at second storey height.
Why Ghost Bamboo
Roots stay put: Its short, thick rhizomes widen the clump only a little each year, so nearby lawn and beds stay free of shoots.
Taller every season: Each summer's culms come up higher than the last, so the clump gains height in steps.
Leafy to the top: The narrow leaves form a soft, dense head that keeps its cover in winter as well as summer.
Useful culms: Old canes cut out when thinning make straight garden stakes and trellis poles.
Modest upkeep: Beyond thinning old culms every year or two, an established clump asks for little more than generous water in dry spells and a seasonal feed.
Ideal Applications
Side and rear boundaries: Spaced along a fence line to hide a neighbour's deck, upstairs windows or a block of units behind.
Green wall for coloured foliage: Its dense green leaf throws red cordylines, crotons and bromeliads planted in front into relief.
Walled courtyard specimen: Thinned to a dozen or so culms so the powdered new canes show, a lone clump gives an enclosed garden height and the rustle of moving leaves.
Acreage screening: Planted in staggered rows on larger blocks to break the wind and hide sheds, tanks and roads.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m between clumps
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 6m, or as a single clump
Best Planting Season: Spring to midsummer, when warm soil and summer rain drive new shoots
Soil & Drainage: Deep, fertile, moisture retentive soil that still drains; it grows fastest with ample water but sulks in standing water
Establishment Care: Water deeply two to three times a week through the first summer and spread 75mm of lucerne or sugar cane mulch over the root zone, clear of the canes. Feed in spring and again in summer with a nitrogen rich fertiliser, which bamboo answers much as a lawn does. Expect a steady fall of papery leaves, heaviest in spring, so keep it back from pools and gutters, and plant it 1.5 to 2m off fences so the clump has room to widen.
