Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Cheese Tree - Glochidion ferdinandi
The name comes from the fruit, a small ribbed capsule that looks like a miniature wheel of cheese and splits open to reveal orange red seed. Glochidion ferdinandi is an east coast rainforest tree that adapts unusually well to open gardens, building a rounded canopy of small glossy leaves on a fairly short trunk. It is also a larval host for several native butterflies, which is a large part of why it gets specified in habitat plantings.
Why Cheese Tree
Fruit Character: The ribbed capsules are the giveaway feature, ripening from green through orange and splitting to show red seed.
Butterfly Host: It supports the larvae of several native butterfly species, adding real ecological function to a garden.
Canopy Shape: A dense rounded crown of small leaves gives useful shade without the coarse look of many rainforest trees.
Soil Range: It grows on coastal sand, heavy clay and reclaimed ground, and tolerates brief periods of wet feet.
Frost Limit: Young plants are damaged by frost, so it suits coastal and near coastal gardens rather than cold inland sites.
Ideal Applications
Suburban shade tree: The moderate size and clean habit make it a sensible choice for a back garden on the east coast.
Habitat and revegetation planting: Widely used in council and landcare projects along the eastern seaboard.
Rainforest garden canopy: It provides the upper layer above lomandras, ferns and native gingers.
Coastal windbreak backing: Set behind a tougher front line it fills the middle canopy of a shelter belt.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a grouped screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn in warm districts
Soil & Drainage: Most soils with reasonable drainage; it prefers moist, organically rich ground and responds strongly to mulch
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers, tapering off as the canopy closes. Mulch to 75mm out to the drip line and formative prune to a single leader in the first two years if you want a clean trunk beneath the crown.
