Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
White Beech - Gmelina leichhardtii
White beech is one of the great cabinet timbers of the eastern Australian rainforests and a fine ornamental tree in its own right. Gmelina leichhardtii carries large, softly hairy leaves on a broad, well proportioned crown, drops them briefly in late winter, then flushes fresh growth alongside cream flowers marked with purple brown throats. The blue purple fruit that follows draws fruit eating birds. It belongs in a warm, sheltered garden with deep soil, where it grows into a substantial shade tree with genuine rainforest character.
Why White Beech
Leaf Presence: Broad, soft, pale backed leaves give the canopy a distinctive two toned shimmer when wind moves through it.
Flowers: Cream to white tubular flowers marked with purple brown appear in spring and early summer among the new growth.
Bird Fruit: Ovoid blue purple fruit ripens in summer and is heavily taken by rainforest pigeons and other fruit eaters.
Brief Bare Period: The short leafless spell in late winter lets low sun through before the canopy closes again for summer.
Rainforest Heritage: A significant Australian rainforest species, valued historically for its pale, easily worked timber.
Ideal Applications
Rainforest Restoration: A canopy species in subtropical rainforest revegetation along the east coast.
Large Garden Shade Tree: A broad crowned shade tree for acreage in warm, frost free districts.
Native Avenue: Planted along driveways on subtropical properties with deep, moist soil.
Habitat Planting: Included where fruit bearing natives are wanted to attract pigeons and other rainforest birds.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn while soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Deep, fertile, moisture retentive soil with free drainage, ideally in a sheltered position out of hot drying wind
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first two summers and mulch heavily with leaf litter or composted bark to keep the root zone cool and moist. Provide light overhead shade or a wind break for the first year or two, as young plants prefer filtered light and are damaged by frost.
