Red Silky Oak - Grevillea banksii var. forsteri
This is the red flowered Queensland form of Grevillea banksii, and it is one of the hardest working nectar plants available for a warm Australian garden. Deeply divided grey green leaves with silvery undersides carry large terminal brushes of deep red flowers for most of the year, with the heaviest flush from late winter into spring when little else is feeding honeyeaters. It grows as a large shrub or small multi stemmed tree and it is fast, which makes it useful where a new garden needs presence in two seasons rather than ten.
Why Red Silky Oak
Almost Continuous Flower: Red brushes appear through most months in frost free districts, peaking in the cooler half of the year.
Honeyeater Magnet: Large nectar rich flower heads bring wattlebirds, lorikeets and honeyeaters into a garden reliably.
Silvered Foliage: The ferny divided leaves show silver undersides, giving the whole plant a soft grey cast from a distance.
Rapid Establishment: Fast early growth fills a gap or screens a fence line within two to three seasons.
Coastal and Dry Tolerance: Handles sandy coastal soils, salt wind and extended dry once its roots are down.
Ideal Applications
Fast Informal Screen: Planted in a row it covers a fence or boundary quickly with an unclipped, natural outline.
Bird Garden Anchor: The centrepiece of a native planting designed to hold nectar feeders year round.
Coastal Windbreak: Tolerates exposed sandy sites where broadleaf exotics burn.
Low Water Feature Shrub: Works as a standalone specimen in a gravel or dry garden with no irrigation once established.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early autumn, avoiding cold wet soil
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is essential. Sandy or gravelly soils are ideal, and heavy clay must be mounded or raised. Neutral to acidic
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first three to four months only, then reduce sharply, since prolonged wet around the collar is the main cause of sudden collapse in this species. Use only low phosphorus native fertiliser, mulch with coarse gravel or bark kept well clear of the stem, and tip prune lightly after each flowering flush to keep the plant dense and extend its useful life, as unpruned plants open up and become leggy.
