Bronze Rambler Grevillea (Standard) - Grevillea ‘Bronze Rambler’
This is a groundcover grevillea grafted high onto a clear stem, so the growth that would normally run flat along the soil instead spills down from a single trunk as a dense weeping curtain. Grevillea ‘Bronze Rambler’ brings finely divided foliage that flushes coppery bronze on every new shoot, with deep red toothbrush flowers held through the head. Landscape designers reach for it when they want a native plant to perform the job of a clipped standard without the water demand or the formality of a topiary bay or buxus.
Why Bronze Rambler
Cascading Habit: The prostrate growth hangs rather than mounds, giving a fountain of foliage that reaches almost to the ground from a head at chest height.
Bronze New Growth: Fresh shoots emerge rusty bronze and age to deep green, so the plant carries two tones for most of the year.
Long Flowering: Red toothbrush flowers peak in late winter and spring but appear sporadically across the warmer months, drawing honeyeaters into a courtyard.
Grafted Toughness: The rootstock lets it cope with heavier and less perfectly drained soils than the cultivar manages on its own roots.
Low Water Once Set: After the first summer it runs on rainfall in most temperate and Mediterranean climate gardens.
Ideal Applications
Entry Pairs: Two matched standards either side of a door or gate give symmetry that still reads as an Australian garden.
Raised Beds and Wall Tops: Positioned near an edge, the weeping head drapes over stone or rendered blockwork.
Large Containers: The confined root run suits its drainage preference, and the trailing head balances a tall pot.
Rhythm Planting: A run of standards down a path sets a repeated vertical accent above low native groundcovers.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m in a repeated row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring; avoid midsummer planting in hot inland districts
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained sandy or gravelly soil, neutral to slightly acidic, mounded if the site holds moisture
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first summer, then only in extended dry spells. Mulch with coarse bark kept away from the graft union, and feed only with a low phosphorus native fertiliser, as standard garden fertilisers will damage the roots.
