Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Grevillea humifusa (Standard)
Grown flat on the ground this is a rare Western Australian mat plant, but grafted onto a clear stem it becomes something else entirely: a compact weeping standard with a head of soft grey-green divided foliage and red and orange toothbrush flowers held out through it. Grevillea humifusa is naturally restricted to a very small area of the WA northern sandplain and is a threatened species in the wild, which makes a grafted garden plant both an unusual specimen and a conservation-friendly choice. Grafting is the key to it: on its own roots it is difficult outside a dry sandy climate, while a grafted plant will grow in gardens across much of southern and eastern Australia.
Why Spreading Grevillea
Weeping Head: The naturally prostrate stems hang from the graft point in a neat, self-forming dome with almost no pruning.
Winter Colour: Red and orange toothbrush flowers carry from autumn through winter into spring, when little else in a dry garden is in flower.
Rootstock Advantage: The graft gives it tolerance of clay, summer humidity and irrigated garden beds that the species will not accept on its own roots.
Fine Texture: Small, deeply lobed leaves read as soft and silvery from a distance, a useful contrast against broad-leaved shrubs.
Bird Value: The nectar-rich flowers sit at an accessible height for small honeyeaters.
Ideal Applications
Collector and Native Gardens: An uncommon Western Australian species presented as a formal shape.
Courtyard Feature: Small enough for a paved courtyard yet distinct enough to carry the space on its own.
Gravel Garden Accent: Sits well above a mulch of decomposed granite or crushed rock alongside low water companions.
Pot Culture: A large, sharply drained container suits it and keeps root conditions in your control.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m in a repeated row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn in warm districts, early spring in cold ones
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sand or gravelly loam; mound the planting position if drainage is at all doubtful
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first summer only, then rely on rainfall in most seasons. Use coarse gravel or chunky bark mulch rather than fine compost, keep mulch off the stem, and never apply phosphorus.
