Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Daintree Pine - Gymnostoma australianum
Despite the common name this is not a conifer but a member of the casuarina family, restricted in the wild to a very small pocket of lowland forest in the Daintree region of far north Queensland. Gymnostoma australianum forms a slim tree of fine, drooping, needle like branchlets that read as texture rather than mass, so it works where a solid canopy would darken a courtyard. It is grown as much for its rarity and conservation value as for its looks, and its narrow habit makes it one of the few Australian rainforest trees that suits a confined bed.
Why Daintree Pine
Fine Texture: Thread like branchlets hang in soft curtains that move in the slightest breeze and contrast well with broad leaved tropical planting.
Narrow Frame: The crown stays slim and upright rather than spreading, which keeps it usable in gardens of ordinary size.
Rarity: The species is highly restricted in the wild, and garden planting supports its conservation in cultivation.
Container Tolerance: It accepts life in a large pot better than most rainforest trees, holding form for years.
Quiet Character: Growth is measured rather than rampant, so it will not outgrow the spot it was chosen for in a few seasons.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard Feature: A single specimen supplies vertical line and soft texture in a paved space.
Narrow Entry Beds: Its slim profile fits garden strips beside a path or wall where wider trees fail.
Rainforest Layering: Planted among gingers, palms and ferns it lifts the mid canopy without heavy shade.
Large Containers: Suitable for oversized pots on terraces in frost free coastal districts.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m for a fine textured screen line
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn in warm districts, avoiding the coldest months
Soil & Drainage: Moist but free draining soil enriched with organic matter; it dislikes both drought and stagnant water
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently moist for the first two summers, since young plants have little tolerance for drying out. Mulch generously with leaf litter or fine bark and shelter young trees from cold drying wind and frost.
