Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Pallida Witch Hazel - Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Pallida’
In the depths of winter, on bare grey branches, ‘Pallida’ opens crowded clusters of clear sulphur-yellow ribbon petals with a sweet, carrying fragrance. It is widely regarded as the benchmark yellow witch hazel, and the pale flower colour shows up in dull winter light far better than the coppery red cultivars do. Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Pallida’ needs a genuinely cool climate to perform, so it belongs in Tasmania, the Victorian and New South Wales highlands, the Adelaide Hills and similar districts.
Why Pallida
Midwinter Flowering: Flowers on leafless wood in the coldest weeks, when almost nothing else in a cool-climate garden is in bloom.
Fragrance: A clean sweet scent that carries several metres on still winter air.
Flower Visibility: The pale sulphur yellow reads clearly against dark backgrounds and low winter light.
Autumn Colour: Broad hazel-like leaves turn butter yellow before falling, giving a second season of interest.
Vase Shaped Frame: An open, spreading, layered branch structure that looks deliberate even when bare.
Ideal Applications
Winter Garden Focus: Sited where it can be seen and smelled from a door or window in July and August.
Woodland Edge Planting: Grown under high deciduous canopy with hellebores, snowdrops and ferns beneath.
Cool Climate Shrub Border: Provides structure and out-of-season flower in highland and Tasmanian gardens.
Cutting Material: A few stems brought inside will scent a room for days.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or late winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Cool, deep, humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil that is acidic to neutral and free draining; it dislikes alkaline, shallow or dry soils
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently moist through the first three summers, because drought stress in February shows up as poor flowering the following winter. Mulch thickly with leaf mould or composted bark, and rub out any suckers that appear below the graft union so the rootstock does not take over.
