Overview & Specifications

Canary Island Ivy - Hedera canariensis
Where English ivy is small-leaved and fussy in detail, this species is bold: Hedera canariensis carries glossy leaves the size of a hand on wine-red stems, and it covers ground or wall faster and more evenly than almost anything else that will also grow in deep shade. It is the plant of choice for the difficult vertical or the dry bank under established trees, and it stays green through drought that browns off turf. It is also vigorous enough to become an environmental weed in cooler parts of southern Australia, so it should be contained, kept away from bushland, and not allowed to climb into tree canopies where it fruits and sets seed.
Why Canary Island Ivy
Large Glossy Leaves: Broad, leathery, deep green leaves give a lush look that reads well from a distance on a big wall.
Shade Performance: It thrives in positions with little direct sun where most groundcovers thin out and fail.
Rapid Coverage: Established plants close over bare soil quickly, suppressing weeds and holding a slope.
Self-Clinging: Aerial roots grip masonry without wires, though those roots will mark render and paint, so grow it on a wire frame where the surface matters.
Requires Containment: Vigorous and weedy in cool moist districts; edge it annually and keep it off neighbouring trees and native vegetation.
Toxicity warning: The leaves and berries are toxic if eaten and the sap can irritate skin.
Ideal Applications
Fence and Wall Greening: Turns a bare boundary into a green surface within a couple of seasons.
Dry Shade Groundcover: Covers the difficult root zone beneath large established trees.
Batter and Slope Stabilisation: The dense mat of stems and roots binds soil on embankments.
Retaining Wall Softening: Spilled over the top of blockwork or stone to break a hard horizontal line.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m along a fence or wall line
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m as mass groundcover
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring; avoid establishing in peak summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable to most soils including clay, provided drainage is reasonable; tolerates poor and compacted ground
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first summer while runners knit together, after which it needs little supplementary water. Mulch between plants until coverage closes, and trim the leading edges each year to hold it inside its intended bed.
