Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Heliconia bihai ’Claw’
The ’Claw’ selections of Heliconia bihai are named for the shape of their bracts, which curve outward from the stem like a row of hooked talons. This is a large, robust clumping perennial with strong upright canes and paddle leaves, topped by an erect inflorescence of firm red bracts edged in yellow-green. It is one of the heliconias most often planted for structure as much as flower, because the clump itself is dense enough to function as a soft green wall in a warm garden.
Why the ’Claw’
Hooked bract shape: The strongly recurved bracts give a distinctly sculptural inflorescence, unlike the flatter bihai forms.
Substantial clump: Canes are thick and closely set, making the plant useful as a screening mass in its own right.
Bold scale: Among the taller bihai selections, comfortably clearing 3m in good conditions.
Weeks of colour: Bracts are waxy and durable, holding their colour far longer than true flowers would.
Bird visitors: Nectar held in the bracts attracts honeyeaters in subtropical gardens.
Ideal Applications
Living privacy screen: A row along a boundary gives a fast, dense, entirely tropical barrier.
Resort-style entry planting: The scale suits driveways and entries in tropical developments.
Corner anchor in large beds: Fills a difficult corner with height and mass in a single season.
Commercial cut flower rows: Reliable producer of large, transportable stems.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Warm season planting, late spring to early autumn in the tropics
Soil & Drainage: Deep friable soil with high organic content and reliable drainage; avoid compacted clay
Establishment Care: Irrigate frequently for the first three months so the rhizome never dries, then maintain even moisture year round. Mulch to 100mm with compost, feed regularly through the wet season, and thin older canes each year to keep light into the centre of the clump.
