Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sagisi Palm - Heterospathe elata
The sagisi palm is a solitary feather palm from the tropical islands north of Australia, and it is grown here for a habit that stays elegant rather than heavy: a slim ringed trunk, a modest crown, and long arching fronds that new leaves push through in a coppery pink flush before hardening to green. Heterospathe elata tolerates shade while young, which makes it one of the more forgiving palms to establish under an existing canopy. It suits tropical and warm subtropical gardens and will not survive frost.
Why Sagisi Palm
Coloured New Growth: Emerging fronds open with a coppery pink cast, giving the crown a change of colour several times a year.
Slender Trunk: A narrow ringed stem keeps the plant visually light, so groups do not feel crowded.
Shade Tolerance When Young: It establishes happily in filtered light beneath existing trees, then takes more sun as it gains height.
Clean Habit: Old fronds shed reasonably cleanly and the palm needs little more than occasional tidying.
Group Planting Value: Slim trunks of staggered heights build a convincing rainforest effect in a small area.
Ideal Applications
Tropical Garden Grove: Planted in threes and fives at varied heights for a layered canopy.
Understorey Beneath Larger Trees: Handles filtered light where sun demanding palms fail.
Poolside and Courtyard: No spines, a slim footprint and manageable litter make it suitable near paving and water.
Resort Style Entry Planting: Repeated along a drive or path in frost free districts for a strong tropical arrival.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2m to 3m for a dense grove effect
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m to 4m
Best Planting Season: Warm months, from spring through to early autumn
Soil & Drainage: Rich, moist, humus laden soil with free drainage; it likes consistent moisture but not stagnant water
Establishment Care: Keep water up through the first two summers, as palms establish on steady moisture rather than deep infrequent soakings. Mulch generously around but not against the trunk base, provide shelter from strong wind while the crown is low, and feed with a palm fertiliser through the warm months.
