Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Nepalese Blue Bamboo - Himalayacalamus porcatus
New culms on Himalayacalamus porcatus emerge coated in a powdery blue white bloom before ageing through olive to yellow green, so an established clump shows several colours at once. It is a clumping bamboo, not a runner, meaning the rhizomes stay short and the plant expands slowly outward from where it is planted rather than travelling under fences. Coming from the Himalaya, it is at its best in cool and temperate districts and dislikes prolonged tropical heat.
Why Nepalese Blue Bamboo
Blue New Culms: The waxy bloom on fresh canes is genuinely blue in the first months, a rare colour in bamboo.
Clumping Root System: Non invasive rhizomes make it safe near boundaries where a running bamboo would be a liability.
Fine Textured Foliage: Small delicate leaves give a light airy canopy rather than a heavy one.
Narrow Upright Habit: The clump stays tight, which suits screening in beds barely a metre wide.
Cool Climate Hardiness: Unlike most ornamental bamboos it handles genuine cold and frost once established.
Ideal Applications
Boundary Screening: A line of clumps gives fast height along a fence without invading neighbouring gardens.
Courtyard Vertical Accent: The slim coloured canes read strongly against rendered or painted walls.
Large Planters and Troughs: Performs well in substantial containers provided watering is consistent.
Softening Blank Walls: Breaks up long featureless surfaces with movement and shifting shadow.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn
Soil & Drainage: Moist, humus rich and free draining; bamboos are heavy feeders and this one resents drying out
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the first two summers and mulch to 100mm, since a dry clump sheds leaves fast and takes a season to recover. Feed with a high nitrogen or lawn type fertiliser in spring, thin out the oldest canes at ground level each year to show off the new blue growth, and site it away from hot dry westerly wind, which this mountain species does not enjoy.
