Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Curly Palm - Howea belmoreana
The curly palm is the less common of the two palms endemic to Lord Howe Island, and it is the better looking of the pair at close range: fronds arch upward and curve inward, with the leaflets held at an angle that gives the crown a distinctly curled, shuttlecock appearance. Howea belmoreana grows more slowly and more compactly than the kentia, and it shares that palm's remarkable tolerance of shade and cool conditions. It is one of very few palms that look genuinely at home in a temperate Australian garden.
Why Curly Palm
Distinctive Crown: Upward arching fronds with curling leaflets give a shape no other commonly grown palm offers.
Cool Climate Tolerance: It handles temperate coastal conditions and light frost once established, unlike most feather palms.
Deep Shade Capable: Performs in low light, which is why it has been a favourite conservatory and atrium palm for well over a century.
Slow and Well Behaved: Gentle growth and a single slim trunk mean it does not outgrow a courtyard in a hurry.
Australian Native: Endemic to Lord Howe Island in New South Wales, so it is a native palm rather than an imported look.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard Grove: Groups of staggered heights create depth in small shaded spaces.
Poolside Planting: No spines, modest litter and salt tolerance make it a practical choice around water and paving.
Understorey Beneath Canopy: Thrives in filtered light under established trees where little else has presence.
Large Containers and Atriums: Long recognised as one of the best palms for pots, indoors or in sheltered outdoor rooms.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2m to 3m for a grouped grove
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring through to autumn, avoiding cold snaps
Soil & Drainage: Moist, humus rich and free draining; it tolerates sandy coastal soils with added organic matter
Establishment Care: Provide shade or filtered light for the first summer if the plant has been grown under cover, as sudden full sun will burn the fronds. Water steadily, mulch well, and feed lightly with a palm fertiliser through the warm months rather than heavily once a year.
