Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Snow Queen Oakleaf Hydrangea - Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Snow Queen’
Oakleaf hydrangeas earn their place four ways, and ‘Snow Queen’ does all of them well: large upright white cones in early summer, deeply lobed oak-shaped leaves, burgundy autumn colour, then cinnamon bark peeling from bare winter stems. Unlike the mopheads, the flowers of Hydrangea quercifolia stay white regardless of soil pH, so there is no blueing or pinking to manage. The panicles are held stiffly upright rather than flopping after rain.
Why Snow Queen Oakleaf Hydrangea
Four Season Interest: Flower, foliage, autumn colour and exfoliating winter bark, all on one plant.
Colour Stability: Blooms are white whatever the soil, ageing through pink to parchment on the bush.
Autumn Tones: The big lobed leaves turn deep burgundy and bronze before falling, best where winters are cool.
Upright Panicles: Cones 20 to 30cm long stand up rather than bowing under their own weight.
Shade Performance: It flowers reliably in positions with only morning sun.
Ideal Applications
Woodland Border: Planted beneath high deciduous canopy with ferns and hellebores.
Shaded Courtyard: A structural flowering shrub for the cool side of a house.
Massed Drift: Repeated along a shaded path for a run of white in early summer.
Cut and Dried Flower: Panicles cut fresh, or left to dry to parchment on the stem.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m for a continuous drift
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Humus rich, moist and well drained, slightly acidic. It will not tolerate dry sandy ground or waterlogging.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers, as the large leaves wilt quickly in heat. Mulch with leaf litter or composted bark and prune only straight after flowering, since next season's buds form on old wood.
