Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Hydriastele microcarpa
Hydriastele microcarpa is a slender rainforest feather palm from New Guinea, grown by collectors and tropical landscapers for its very fine trunk, prominent crownshaft and small crown of neatly divided fronds. It is not a common nursery palm in Australia, so it tends to be specified where a designer wants something other than the usual golden cane or foxtail. Treat it as a warm-climate rainforest species: humidity, shelter and consistent moisture matter more to it than sun.
Why Hydriastele microcarpa
Fine proportions: A notably slim ringed trunk carries a small crown, giving vertical height without visual bulk.
Crownshaft: A clean, smooth crownshaft below the fronds provides a crisp architectural break.
Uncommon: Rarely seen in Australian gardens, so it distinguishes a planting from standard palm choices.
Understorey habit: Grows naturally beneath canopy, so it accepts filtered light rather than demanding open sun.
Grouping potential: Slim trunks look best planted in clusters, building a layered rainforest effect.
Ideal Applications
Tropical collector gardens: A specimen palm for growers wanting something beyond the mainstream.
Canopy underplanting: Sits comfortably under established rainforest trees in filtered light.
Sheltered courtyards: Suits warm, humid, wind-protected internal spaces.
Grouped vertical accent: Planted in threes or fives for height in a confined footprint.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2.5m in a close grove
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Wet season in the tropics; late spring to summer in subtropical areas
Soil & Drainage: Deep, rich, moisture-retentive soil that drains freely. It is frost tender and wind sensitive, so restrict it to sheltered tropical and warm subtropical positions.
Establishment Care: Water two to three times a week through the first year and do not allow the root zone to dry out. Mulch heavily with organic matter, provide overhead shade or shade cloth while young, and feed with a slow-release palm fertiliser in spring and midsummer.
