Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Hydriastele wendlandiana
This slender clustering feather palm comes from monsoon forest and creek margins across northern Australia and New Guinea, where Hydriastele wendlandiana builds a colony of fine cane-like trunks instead of one heavy stem. Its leaflets are cut off square at the tips, giving the crown a ragged, feathered outline quite unlike the smooth arcs of a cocos or foxtail. Designers reach for it when a tall tropical vertical is wanted in a narrow bed, because the clump stays tight at the base for many years.
Why Hydriastele wendlandiana
Clumping Habit: New suckers rise from the base over time, so a single plant matures into a multi-trunked stand with staggered heights.
Fine Trunk Diameter: Stems stay around 5 to 8cm thick, which keeps the palm visually light even at full height.
Ragged Leaflet Tips: The bluntly torn leaflet ends catch light differently through the day and give the crown a soft, shredded texture.
Waterside Tolerance: It grows naturally on stream banks and copes with soil that stays damp, provided the profile is not stagnant.
Bird Attracting Fruit: Small red fruit follow the flowering arms and draw pigeons and other fruit eaters into the garden.
Ideal Applications
Sheltered Courtyards: The narrow base fits a bed only a metre or two wide while the crown clears the surrounding walls.
Rainforest Understorey Planting: Groups well beneath taller canopy trees where light arrives filtered rather than direct.
Creek and Pond Edges: Suited to the moist ground along water features and natural drainage lines.
Tropical Screen Planting: Set in a row it builds a soft vertical curtain of trunks with foliage held high.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer in the tropics, late spring once soils warm in the subtropics
Soil & Drainage: Deep, humus rich and consistently moist with free drainage below; avoid dry sands and hard compacted clay
Establishment Care: Water deeply two or three times a week through the first two summers, because this palm sulks badly once it dries out. Keep a 75mm leaf mulch pulled clear of the stems and feed with a palm fertiliser in spring and again in mid summer.
