Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Spindle Palm - Hyophorbe verschaffeltii
The swollen, spindle shaped trunk is the whole reason to grow Hyophorbe verschaffeltii, tapering at both ends with a smooth grey surface and clean ring scars, topped by a short orange tinged crownshaft and a handful of arching fronds. It is a slow, solitary palm that stays small enough for a courtyard, and it never produces the litter or height of a coconut or royal palm. Warmth is non negotiable, so it belongs in the frost free coastal and tropical north.
Why Spindle Palm
Sculptural Trunk: The bulging spindle shape is a genuine feature rather than a simple column.
Contained Size: Mature height of around 4 to 6m makes it usable beside a two storey wall.
Solitary Habit: It does not sucker or clump, so it holds a clean single stem indefinitely.
Low Litter: A small crown of fronds means minimal debris around pools and paving.
Salt Tolerance: Its island origin means it accepts coastal exposure and sandy soils.
Ideal Applications
Poolside Feature: A matched pair either side of a pool gives resort structure with minimal cleanup.
Tropical Courtyard: Sized correctly for enclosed spaces where taller palms would overwhelm.
Entry Statement: Planted singly in a raised bed where the trunk shape can be uplit at night.
Large Container Culture: Slow growth suits long term pot planting on a warm terrace.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Late spring through summer while soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy loam with organic matter, consistently moist but never waterlogged
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist for the first year with two or three waterings a week in summer. Feed with a palm specific fertiliser containing magnesium and potassium twice yearly, since yellowing lower fronds usually signal a nutrient shortage rather than a watering fault.
