Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Douglasii Creeping Juniper - Juniperus horizontalis ‘Douglasii’
Despite the tags it sometimes carries, this is not a tree. Juniperus horizontalis ‘Douglasii’ is a prostrate conifer that runs flat across the ground in overlapping layers, rarely exceeding 400mm high while spreading two to three metres. The foliage is a distinct steel blue through the warm months and shifts to plum purple through winter, a seasonal change almost no other evergreen groundcover offers. It is planted where hard, dry, sunbaked ground needs covering permanently and cheaply in maintenance terms.
Why Douglasii
Genuinely prostrate: It hugs the ground and spreads sideways rather than building height, so sightlines are never interrupted.
Seasonal colour shift: Steel blue summer foliage takes on a purple plum cast through cold weather.
Extreme toughness: It handles poor, stony, alkaline and sandy soils, reflected heat and coastal wind once established.
Weed suppression: A dense mature mat shades the soil surface and shuts out most annual weeds.
Erosion control: Layered branches pin down loose soil on banks and batters where turf will not hold.
Ideal Applications
Embankment cover: Mass planted on a slope it stabilises the surface and removes the need to mow difficult ground.
Spilling over walls: Set at the top of a retaining wall or raised bed the branches cascade over the face.
Rock and gravel gardens: Its drought tolerance and low profile suit dry landscape schemes and driveway islands.
Coastal foreshore planting: Salt laden wind and sandy soil are well within its tolerance.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant. For mass groundcover set plants 1.2 to 1.5m apart to knit within a few seasons
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m clear of paths and edges where a single plant is displayed spilling over a wall
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring, avoiding cold waterlogged soil
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is non negotiable. Sandy, gravelly, rocky and alkaline soils are all fine, heavy wet clay is not
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer to settle the roots, then reduce sharply, since overwatering an established juniper causes more losses than drought does. Mulch with gravel or coarse bark rather than fine organic matter, which can hold moisture against the low foliage and encourage rot.
