Drake Felt Bush - Kalanchoe beharensis ‘Drake’
Everything about this Kalanchoe beharensis selection is about texture: large triangular leaves, deeply crimped at the edges, covered in a dense bronze to olive felt that catches low light. It builds slowly into an upright branching shrub on a woody stem, shedding lower leaves to reveal a knobbly trunk. Designers use it where a succulent needs to read as a small tree rather than a ground hugging rosette.
Why Drake Felt Bush
Felted Leaves: A dense covering of fine hairs gives a suede surface unlike anything else in a succulent bed.
Upright Branching: Grows into a small shrub with a visible trunk, giving vertical interest in a low planting.
Crimped Margins: Heavily waved and undulating leaf edges make a strong sculptural outline.
Minimal Water: Fleshy leaves store enough moisture to carry it through long dry periods.
Warm Climate Reliability: Thrives in the heat and humidity of coastal Queensland and northern New South Wales.
Ideal Applications
Succulent Bed Centrepiece: Raises the eye above a flat planting of aeoniums, agaves and sedums.
Sheltered Courtyard Feature: Best in a warm protected corner where the felted leaves stay undamaged.
Feature Pot: A wide shallow container displays both the trunk and the leaf texture well.
Indoor Atrium Planting: Tolerates bright interior light in a well lit atrium or glasshouse.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer only
Soil & Drainage: Gritty free draining succulent mix or sandy soil, absolutely no waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water sparingly, roughly every ten days in the first warm season and far less in winter, since rot is the main cause of failure. Site it out of driving rain and heavy frost, and use a gravel or coarse sand mulch to keep the base dry.
