Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Diamonds in the Dark Red Hot Crepe Myrtle - Lagerstroemia indica ‘Red Hot’
‘Red Hot’ is the deepest coloured of the Diamonds in the Dark group, pairing rich crimson red flower panicles with the same near black foliage that defines the series. Because leaf and bloom sit close together in tone, the effect is smouldering rather than sharply contrasting, and it reads with real intensity in full afternoon sun. Like the rest of the series, this Lagerstroemia indica selection stays at shrub scale and flowers on new wood from midsummer through autumn.
Why Red Hot
Deep red bloom: The flower colour is a strong true red, holding intensity in bright light rather than washing to pink.
Dark canopy: Burgundy black foliage carries through the whole season, so the plant contributes colour outside flowering.
Manageable size: It stays well under the height of a traditional crepe myrtle, suiting small gardens and boundary beds.
Autumn finish: Late season foliage takes on red and orange tones before leaf fall, extending the display.
Tough constitution: Heat, drought and reflected warmth from paving are all handled without loss of flowering.
Ideal Applications
Hot colour border: It sits naturally with salvias, cannas and ornamental grasses in a warm toned scheme.
Driveway edge: Repeated at regular spacing it softens hard paving with summer colour and needs little water.
Compact feature: A single plant works as the focal point in a small front garden or a paved courtyard.
Container planting: Grown in a large pot it flowers reliably where in-ground space is not available.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil of average fertility. It copes with clay if the bed is raised or improved, but will not tolerate water sitting around the roots in winter.
Establishment Care: Give deep weekly watering through the first two summers, then reduce as the plant becomes self sufficient. Apply a low nitrogen fertiliser in early spring, mulch to moderate soil temperature, and prune in late winter, cutting back the previous season's growth to build a strong framework of flowering wood.
