Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Lanonia centralis
Lanonia centralis is a small understorey fan palm from the rainforests of Vietnam, part of a group split out of the better known Licuala. It carries pleated, segmented fan leaves on slender stems and stays low, which is precisely why collectors and designers use it: it fills the layer beneath taller palms without ever competing with them. Treat it as a shade specialist and give it the humid, sheltered, moist conditions it grew up in.
Why Lanonia centralis
Understorey Scale: Stays small enough to plant beneath an existing canopy without needing to be removed later.
Pleated Fan Leaves: Segmented, ribbed leaf blades give the distinctive folded texture of the licuala group.
Shade Requirement: Genuinely prefers low light, so it solves dark, protected garden corners.
Slow and Tidy: Very little maintenance beyond removing spent leaves; it will not outgrow a courtyard.
Collector Interest: Rarely offered in Australia and unfamiliar to most visitors, which is part of its appeal.
Ideal Applications
Rainforest Understorey Layer: Planted in groups beneath established palms and rainforest trees.
Shaded Courtyard Bed: Suits protected, humid, walled spaces with filtered overhead light.
Container Planting Under Cover: Long lived in a pot on a sheltered verandah or in an atrium.
Tropical Poolside Screen Planting: Grouped along a shaded pool surround for soft green texture.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m for a low understorey drift
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m as individual accents
Best Planting Season: Late spring and summer, once soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Rich, organic, consistently moist soil that still drains freely. Avoid dry sandy ground and any position where water pools.
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist and never allow it to dry out completely, particularly in the first two summers. Mulch with leaf litter or composted bark, protect from wind, and note that this palm is frost sensitive and needs a warm, sheltered microclimate outside the subtropics.
