Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Pineapple Zamia - Lepidozamia peroffskyana
The Pineapple Zamia is the largest and glossiest of the Australian rainforest cycads, sending out fronds up to two metres long in a wide, arching crown of deep lacquered green. Lepidozamia peroffskyana occurs naturally in the wet forests of south east Queensland and north east New South Wales, so unlike the desert cycads it wants shade, moisture and organic soil. Over decades it builds a stout trunk and becomes one of the most valuable plants in an established garden.
Why the Pineapple Zamia
Frond Length: Fronds reach up to 2m, giving a spread few other shade plants can match.
High Gloss Foliage: Leaflets carry a wet-looking shine that catches light in deep shade.
Rainforest Origin: Genuinely shade adapted, so it thrives under established canopy.
Cold Tolerance: Handles light frost and cool winters better than tropical cycads.
Trunk Development: Forms a substantial trunk with age, lifting the crown into a palm-like silhouette.
Toxicity warning: All parts, especially the seeds, are highly toxic to dogs and people if eaten, so consider placement in a pet household.
Ideal Applications
Rainforest Understorey: The defining mid-layer plant beneath tall native canopy trees.
Shaded Entry Feature: One specimen in a protected entry bed reads as instant maturity.
Southern Aspect Beds: Performs on the shaded side of a building where most feature plants fail.
Large Scale Container: The bigger sizes work as podium and atrium specimens with reliable moisture.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5m to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn
Soil & Drainage: Deep, humus-rich, free-draining soil; heavy clay must be broken up and raised
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first two summers, keeping soil moist but never boggy. Mulch heavily with leaf litter or composted bark held clear of the crown, and remove old fronds only after the new flush has hardened.
