Cape Schanck Coast Beard Heath - Leucopogon parviflorus ‘Cape Schanck’
This is a plant shaped by salt wind. Leucopogon parviflorus grows naturally on the front line of southern Australian dunes and headlands, and this compact coastal selection keeps that low, wind pruned density in the garden rather than stretching into the leggier form seedlings often take. It is the sensible choice where a native hedge has to survive exposure that would burn a lilly pilly or a viburnum within a season.
Why Cape Schanck Coast Beard Heath
Salt and wind hardiness: It handles direct coastal exposure and salt laden wind without leaf burn.
Dense fine texture: Small stiff leaves pack tightly along the stems, giving a solid visual barrier at low height.
Honey scented bloom: Clusters of tiny white flowers in spring carry a soft honey fragrance and draw native insects.
White fruit for birds: The small white drupes that follow are taken readily by local birds.
Sand tolerance: It thrives in poor, sharply drained sands, including calcareous coastal soils, where richer soils are not required.
Ideal Applications
Coastal windbreak: Planted in a row along an exposed boundary, it takes the sting out of onshore wind for softer plants behind.
Dune and batter stabilisation: Its fibrous root system binds loose sand on slopes and foredunes.
Low native hedge: Tip pruned regularly it holds a clean informal hedge at around a metre.
Textural low water bed: It works alongside coastal grasses, correa and westringia in an unirrigated planting.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring in temperate zones
Soil & Drainage: Sandy or gravelly soil with sharp drainage and low fertility; it will not accept heavy clay or standing water
Establishment Care: Water deeply every ten to fourteen days through the first summer only, then taper off, as constant moisture does more harm than drought. A coarse gravel or chunky bark mulch keeps the crown dry, and light tip pruning from the first year builds the density the plant is grown for.
