Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Licuala peekelii
A collector's fan palm with unusually broad, near-circular leaves split into only a few wide wedge-shaped segments, so each frond reads as a solid green disc rather than a fine fan. Licuala peekelii is a slender, solitary-trunked understorey palm, which is exactly why it works in courtyards and shaded side gardens where a coconut or a kentia group would be too coarse or too tall. It is chosen for leaf quality above all else, and it repays a sheltered, humid position with foliage that looks manufactured.
Why Licuala peekelii
Leaf Form: Broad, pleated, almost circular blades are among the boldest of any palm at this modest scale.
Understorey Habit: It evolved beneath rainforest canopy, so shaded courtyards and atriums suit it rather than compromise it.
Slender Footprint: A single thin trunk means it fits tight garden beds and narrow light wells.
Slow Growth: Its unhurried pace makes it a long-term proposition in a fixed space instead of a plant you outgrow.
Warmth Dependent: It needs frost-free, humid conditions, so it is a wet tropics and sheltered subtropical plant rather than a general purpose palm.
Ideal Applications
Rainforest Understorey: Planted in groups beneath established canopy it builds the middle layer of a tropical garden.
Shaded Courtyards and Atriums: Thrives in the low, even light of enclosed spaces and covered terraces.
Poolside in Shade: Minimal litter and a soft outline suit a protected pool surround.
Large Containers: Excellent in a big pot in a warm, bright, wind-free position.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5-2m when grouped for a layered effect
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5-3m
Best Planting Season: Wet season or late spring into summer, once soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Deep, humus-rich and moisture retentive but free draining. Heavy compost and leaf litter suit it, while cold, waterlogged clay does not.
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently moist for the first two years, never letting it dry out completely, and shelter it from hot dry wind that shreds and browns the leaf margins. Mulch thickly with coarse organic matter and feed lightly with a palm fertiliser in spring and again in mid summer.
