Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Licuala peltata var. sumawongii
Few plants in cultivation match the perfect circular leaf of Licuala peltata var. sumawongii, an undivided pleated disc up to a metre and a half across held on a long slender stem. Unlike most fan palms, whose leaves split into segments, this variety keeps the leaf whole, and that single feature makes it the definitive shade-garden palm for tropical and warm subtropical Australia.
Why Licuala peltata var. sumawongii
Entire circular leaf: The undivided pleated disc is unique among commonly grown palms and reads as pure geometry.
Shade specialist: It genuinely prefers low light, thriving in positions where most palms yellow and stall.
Compact footprint: A slender solitary trunk and modest spread suit courtyards and narrow planting beds.
Slow and stable: Growth is measured, so a planting scheme holds its proportions for many years.
Understorey layering: Its leaf shape contrasts strongly with strappy and finely divided tropical foliage.
Ideal Applications
Shaded courtyard: The best possible use, in a protected paved space where wind cannot reach the leaves.
Rainforest understorey planting: Beneath an established canopy alongside gingers, calatheas and ferns.
Atrium and covered entry: Performs in bright indirect light under a roof or shade structure.
Feature container: A single palm in a large pot against a dark wall, where the leaf outline is the whole composition.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening palm; for a massed understorey allow 1.5 to 2m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, into warm moist soil
Soil & Drainage: Rich, moist, free-draining soil high in organic matter, ideally mimicking a rainforest floor. It requires humidity and will not tolerate frost, drying wind or a dry root zone.
Establishment Care: Keep the soil consistently moist through the first two years, watering two or three times a week in warm weather and never letting it dry out. Mulch deeply with leaf litter or composted bark, feed lightly with a palm fertiliser twice in the warm season, and site it where wind cannot shred the leaves, as torn discs do not repair.
