Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Australian Fan Palm (Multi-Stem) - Licuala ramsayi
Nothing else in Australian horticulture looks like Licuala ramsayi: an almost perfectly circular pleated frond, up to two metres across, held flat like a parasol. It grows wild in the wet tropical lowland rainforest of far north Queensland, and everything about its cultivation follows from that. Planted as a multi-stem group, several trunks rise together at different heights so the fronds overlap in layers rather than sitting as a single flat tier.
Why the Australian Fan Palm
Frond shape: The circular pleated leaf is the most distinctive of any palm grown in this country.
Layered grouping: Multiple trunks of differing heights create a canopy in depth rather than a single plane.
Australian provenance: A true Queensland rainforest native, not a tropical import.
Shade specialist: It thrives in filtered light where sun demanding palms will not.
Site requirements: It needs humidity, shelter from wind and freedom from frost, so it is a warm coastal and tropical plant.
Ideal Applications
Shaded courtyard: A protected enclosed space gives it the still humid air it wants.
Rainforest underplanting: Beneath an established canopy it fills the middle storey beautifully.
Feature beside a pool or water feature: Reflected light and humidity suit it and the fronds read strongly over water.
Atriums and covered terraces: Bright indirect light and wind protection are close to ideal.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer in warm humid conditions
Soil & Drainage: Rich, moisture retentive but free draining soil, high in organic matter, slightly acidic
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone constantly moist, never allowing it to dry out, and water two or three times weekly through the first two summers. Mulch heavily with leaf litter or composted material, feed with a palm fertiliser in spring and summer, and provide shade and wind protection for the first few years while the crown builds.
