Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Box Leaf Privet - Ligustrum vulgare ‘Buxifolium’
This is the small leaved form of common privet, grown as a substitute for English box where box would be too slow or too vulnerable to blight. Ligustrum vulgare ‘Buxifolium’ has short internodes and small, thick, dark leaves that clip to a tight even face, and it will do it in soil and exposure that box simply will not accept. It takes shearing several times a year without thinning out.
Why Box Leaf Privet
Box Substitute: Leaf size and hedge texture read very close to English box at a fraction of the establishment time.
Clipping Density: Repeated shearing produces a dense, fine surface suitable for parterre, edging and topiary shapes.
Growth Speed: A low hedge closes up in two to three seasons, with two or three trims a year needed to hold the line.
Site Tolerance: It copes with dry shade, root competition from established trees, poor soil, coastal wind and frost.
Flowering Control: Regular clipping removes the flower buds before they open, which is how it is normally grown and avoids both the heavy scent and any seed set.
Toxicity warning: The berries are toxic if eaten, so site it away from play areas.
Ideal Applications
Low formal hedging: Parterre, knot gardens and bed edging where a clipped 400 to 600mm line is wanted.
Driveway and path edging: It holds a crisp line under foot traffic and reflected heat off paving.
Clipped balls and topiary: Dense branching allows tight geometric shapes that hold their form between cuts.
Dry shaded hedges: One of the few formal hedge plants that performs beneath established trees.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.3 to 0.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 0.8 to 1m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring
Soil & Drainage: Almost any reasonable soil including clay and limey ground; it wants drainage but tolerates dryness once rooted
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer so the plants in a run knit into a continuous root mass. Cut the tops back by about a third at planting to force low branching, then trim lightly each time new growth extends 100mm rather than waiting for a single hard annual cut.
