Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Alice Eastwood Lilac - Syringa x hyacinthiflora ‘Alice Eastwood’
‘Alice Eastwood’ opens ahead of the main lilac season with fully double florets in a warm cyclamen magenta, a pinker and brighter tone than the classic purple lilacs it flowers alongside. As a Syringa x hyacinthiflora hybrid it inherits both an earlier bloom and a slightly more relaxed winter chill requirement, which widens the range of Australian gardens where it can be grown successfully. The bush itself is upright and vigorous, and the perfume is the full heavy lilac scent rather than a diluted version of it.
Why ‘Alice Eastwood’
Bloom timing: Among the earliest lilacs to open, useful for stretching the display when planted with later vulgaris cultivars.
Magenta tone: A warm pink purple rather than a cold violet, which sits differently against brick and warm toned walls.
Double florets: Packed petals make the panicles look full and hold the display longer in warm spring weather.
Upright vigour: It builds a strong framework quickly and flowers well from a relatively young age.
Climate range: The hyacinthiflora parentage suits it to districts a little milder than the coldest lilac country.
Ideal Applications
Mixed lilac grouping: Planted with mid and late cultivars to give a continuous six week flowering window.
Rear of a perennial border: Provides spring bulk and scent behind lower plantings in cool climate gardens.
Scented courtyard: Best positioned near a window or outdoor seating where the perfume is captured.
Loose deciduous screen: A row along a fence line gives seasonal privacy plus a heavy spring display.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m apart
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m apart
Best Planting Season: Winter, while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, neutral to slightly alkaline soil, with lime added to acidic ground and no tolerance of wet feet
Establishment Care: A deep weekly soak through the first two summers builds the root system far better than daily sprinkling. Deadhead and prune straight after flowering, and resist heavy nitrogen feeding, which pushes leafy growth at the expense of bloom.
