Olivier de Serres Lilac - Syringa vulgaris ‘Olivier de Serres’
‘Olivier de Serres’ is one of the classic French double lilacs, a Lemoine-era selection carrying dense trusses of pale mauve to lavender-blue flowers with the deep, unmistakable lilac perfume. Syringa vulgaris flowers in spring on wood formed the previous season, and it needs real winter cold to do it properly, so this is a plant for the southern and elevated parts of Australia rather than the warm coast. Where the chill exists, few shrubs match it for scent.
Why Olivier de Serres Lilac
Double flowers: Fully double florets pack the panicles more tightly than single-flowered lilacs, giving heavier trusses.
Perfume: The scent carries several metres on a still spring evening, which is the main reason people plant it.
Colour: Soft lavender-blue to pale mauve, cooler and more subtle than the common purple forms.
Cold hardiness: Thrives in the frost of Tasmania, the Victorian highlands and the NSW tablelands.
Cut flower value: Trusses last well indoors and scent an entire room.
Ideal Applications
Cool-climate shrub borders: A spring anchor plant among roses, peonies and viburnum.
Beside paths and seating: Sited where the perfume is encountered rather than admired from a distance.
Cutting gardens: Grown specifically for spring flowers to bring inside.
Informal screening: A row of lilacs gives seasonal privacy and scent along a fence line.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Well-drained, fertile soil that is neutral to slightly alkaline. Acidic soils reduce flowering, so a light dressing of lime is often worthwhile, and heavy wet ground should be avoided.
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers, then only during prolonged dry weather. Mulch to keep roots cool, prune immediately after flowering rather than in winter so next season's buds are not removed, and remove suckers from the base of grafted plants.
