Lilly Pilly Goodbye Neighbours - Acmena smithii ‘Goodbye Neighbours’
‘Goodbye Neighbours’ is a lilly pilly grown for one job: a tall, narrow evergreen wall that shuts out an overlooking window without swallowing the garden. A form of Acmena smithii, it puts its growth into height rather than spread, and its glossy leaves open copper-red before settling to deep green. Small white flowers in early summer are followed by mauve to white berries.
Why Lilly Pilly Goodbye Neighbours
Height Without Spread: The upright, columnar frame holds a width of 1 to 2m while it climbs, so it fits along a side fence where a broad hedge would take half the lawn.
Clean New Growth: Acmena smithii has strong resistance to the pimple psyllid, so fresh leaves open clean rather than blistered, with no spray programme to keep up.
Quick Height: Strong vertical growth lifts a row above fence height early, and each clip thickens the face of the screen.
Coastal and Wind Tolerance: Handles sea breezes, humidity and exposed positions along the east coast, and takes light frost once established.
Bird Food: Nectar from the summer flowers feeds insects, and the berries that follow draw silvereyes and other fruit-eating birds.
Ideal Applications
Overlook Screening: A single row along the fence closes the view from a neighbour's upstairs window with a clean, close-knit green face.
House-to-Boundary Strips: Suits the tight strip down the side of a house, where a broad lilly pilly would need cutting back from the eaves and path every few months.
Driveway Lines: Run beside a driveway or entry path, it gives a formal, upright edge that stays within its bed.
Entry Columns: Clipped into tall columns it gives a pair of formal sentinels either side of a gate or front door.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding the hottest weeks of summer
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining loam or improved clay enriched with compost; likes even moisture but not waterlogged ground
Establishment Care: Water deeply every two or three days through the first summer, then weekly in dry spells until the row has knitted together. Spread mulch along the whole row and pinch out the leading shoots once the plants have settled so they thicken from low down. Fallen berries can mark pale paving, so set driveway and path rows a little back from light-coloured stone.
