Burgundy Sweet Gum - Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Burgundy’
Where seedling liquidambars colour unpredictably, ‘Burgundy’ was selected for a deep wine red autumn that arrives late and holds for weeks, often into winter in milder districts. Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Burgundy’ builds the same broadly pyramidal frame as the species, with star shaped leaves and corky ridged bark on older wood. It is a big tree, and it is chosen for parkland, large lawns and wide verges where a canopy of that scale is an asset rather than a problem.
Why Burgundy Sweet Gum
Reliable Colour: Grafted stock removes the seedling lottery, so every tree turns the same deep red purple.
Late Season Hold: Colour develops later than most deciduous trees and persists well after others are bare.
Strong Pyramidal Form: A single dominant leader gives an even, symmetrical canopy with minimal formative pruning.
Summer Shade: Dense leaf cover produces genuine cooling shade over lawn and paving through the hottest months.
Climate Range: It performs from Tasmania through to south east Queensland, colouring most strongly where autumn nights are cold.
Ideal Applications
Parkland and Acreage: Given open ground it develops the full canopy that makes the autumn display worthwhile.
Wide Avenue Planting: Repeated along a long drive it produces one of the strongest autumn effects available in Australia.
Shade Over Lawn: A single tree set well back from the house cools a large area of turf.
Windbreak Backdrop: Planted at the rear of a property it screens neighbouring buildings through the growing season.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6 to 8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 12m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn to late winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moist, free draining soil, ideally slightly acid; it will not thrive in shallow soil over rock
Establishment Care: Water deeply and infrequently through the first three summers so roots drive downward rather than sitting near the surface. Mulch a wide circle at least 1.5m across, and site the tree well away from paving, pipes and pools because the surface roots lift hard surfaces and the spiky seed capsules are a nuisance on paths.
