Canberra Gem Sweet Gum - Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Canberra Gem’
Grown in Australia for its dependable orange to crimson autumn display, ‘Canberra Gem’ is a named selection of sweet gum rather than a seedling, so the colour is repeatable from tree to tree. Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Canberra Gem’ carries the familiar star shaped leaves and upright pyramidal habit of the species, colouring most intensely in districts with cold autumn nights such as the ACT, the southern tablelands and inland Victoria. It suits the buyer who wants a matched row rather than a mixed run of reds, oranges and yellows.
Why Canberra Gem Sweet Gum
Matched Autumn Tone: Every tree colours the same way, which matters when planting an avenue or a boundary run.
Cold Climate Performance: Frosty autumn nights sharpen the display rather than damaging the tree.
Upright Leader: A dominant central stem produces a clean pyramidal outline with little formative work.
Corky Bark: Older stems develop ridged corky wings that give the bare winter tree real texture.
Longevity: This is a long lived shade tree that improves for decades rather than needing replacement in fifteen years.
Ideal Applications
Cold Climate Avenues: Best used in the tablelands and inland districts where the colour is most reliable.
Rural Driveways: Long drives on acreage give the tree the room its mature canopy needs.
Large Lawn Specimen: One tree centred in open turf becomes the autumn focus of the whole garden.
Property Boundaries: A staggered row provides seasonal screening and a defined edge to a large block.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6 to 8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 12m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while the tree is fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep loam with steady subsoil moisture and free drainage; avoid shallow or compacted sites
Establishment Care: Build a watering basin the width of the root ball and fill it slowly twice a week through the first two summers. Keep 75 to 100mm of coarse mulch over the root zone and clear of the trunk, and stake low and loosely for the first year only.
