Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Hilleri Sweet Gum - Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Hilleri’
‘Hilleri’ is grown as a more compact and densely branched sweet gum, holding smaller leaves on a tighter frame than the common seedling form. Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Hilleri’ still becomes a substantial shade tree, so it should be treated as a smaller liquidambar rather than a small tree, but the reduced scale brings the species within reach of gardens that could never house the full sized version. Autumn brings the usual mix of orange, scarlet and plum, held on a canopy fine enough to read as a single body of colour.
Why Hilleri Sweet Gum
Smaller Than A Seedling: More restrained than an ordinary seedling liquidambar, but still a large tree that needs room away from paving and services.
Dense Branching: Closely spaced branches make a solid canopy that shades well and screens neighbouring roofs.
Fine Leaf: Smaller star shaped leaves give a finer overall texture and a tidier leaf fall.
Autumn Range: Colour runs through orange, scarlet and deep plum across the canopy rather than a single flat tone.
Frost Tolerance: Fully hardy in cold inland and tableland gardens where autumn colour is strongest.
Ideal Applications
Suburban Shade Tree: Best given room away from paving, pipes and footings, as liquidambar roots are vigorous and surface rooting where a full sized liquidambar would dominate.
Medium Avenues: Repeated down a drive at closer spacing than the species allows.
Screening Above Fence Line: Dense branching blocks upper storey views from neighbouring properties in summer.
Cool Climate Feature: A single tree in a lawn delivers autumn colour without a decades long wait for scale.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6 to 8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 12m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn through winter during dormancy
Soil & Drainage: Deep free draining soil with reliable subsoil moisture; slightly acid ground gives the cleanest autumn colour
Establishment Care: Soak the root zone thoroughly once a week rather than sprinkling daily, continuing through the first two or three summers. Mulch broadly, keep turf and weeds off the root plate while the tree is young, and allow clearance from paving because liquidambar roots run near the surface.
