Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Northern Swamp Box - Lophostemon grandiflorus
Where a site floods in the wet and bakes in the dry, most shade trees fail at one end or the other. Lophostemon grandiflorus handles both, which is why it lines creek flats and seasonal swamps across northern Australia. It is the tropical relative of the familiar brush box, with flaky papery bark, larger cream flowers full of feathery stamens, and leaves gathered in rosettes at the branch tips.
Why Northern Swamp Box
Wet Site Tolerance: It grows naturally on ground that is inundated for part of the year, unusual among fast shade trees.
Bark Interest: The trunk sheds in papery flakes, giving a mottled cream, orange and grey surface all year.
Flower Display: Cream to white flowers with prominent stamens are noticeably larger than those of brush box.
Growth Speed: It puts on height quickly in warm climates, closing a canopy gap within a few seasons.
Native Credentials: A northern Australian species suited to local climate patterns and local wildlife.
Ideal Applications
Creek and drainage line planting: The default choice for banks, swales and low points that hold water seasonally.
Fast shade tree: Delivers usable canopy over lawn or parking in a shorter timeframe than most rainforest trees.
Acreage windbreak: Planted in rows to break hot dry season winds across northern properties.
Park and street planting: Robust enough for public landscapes in tropical and subtropical councils.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 7 to 9m centres
Best Planting Season: Early wet season in the tropics; spring to early summer in the subtropics
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, including heavy clays and seasonally waterlogged ground; also fine on well drained loam
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first dry season to push roots down before the tree relies on rainfall. Mulch to 100mm out to the drip line and formative prune in the first two years to set a single strong leader.
