Overview & Specifications

Chilean Myrtle - Luma apiculata
The bark is the reason to plant this one. Luma apiculata sheds in patches to reveal a smooth cinnamon orange trunk streaked with cream, a colour that intensifies as the tree ages and multiple stems develop. Above that sits a dense canopy of small, dark, aromatic evergreen leaves, white flowers with prominent stamens in late summer, and edible purple black berries in autumn. It belongs in cool moist climates such as Victoria, Tasmania, the Adelaide Hills and the New South Wales tablelands, where it can be grown as a small tree or clipped tightly as a formal hedge.
Why Chilean Myrtle
Cinnamon Bark: Peeling patches expose bright orange and cream trunks that are the plant's defining feature at close range.
Fine Dense Foliage: Small aromatic leaves take clipping well, which is why it is one of the better evergreen hedge subjects in cool districts.
Late Summer Flower: White flowers with a boss of stamens cover the canopy when little else is in bloom.
Edible Berries: Purple black fruit follows the flowers and attracts birds through autumn.
Multi Stem Potential: Left unpruned at the base it forms several trunks, multiplying the bark display.
Ideal Applications
Formal Hedging: Clipped to 1.5 to 2.5m it holds a crisp face with two trims a year.
Multi Stem Feature: Grown as a small tree with lower branches removed it becomes a bark specimen beside an entry.
Courtyard Screening: Dense evergreen cover gives year round privacy in confined cool climate gardens.
Woodland Edge: It sits well among camellias, hydrangeas and maples in a sheltered cool garden.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding hard frost periods for young plants
Soil & Drainage: Moisture retentive, humus rich, free draining soil; it dislikes hot dry sand and prolonged drought
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist through the first two summers, as young plants check badly if allowed to dry out. Mulch with 50 to 75mm of leaf litter or fine bark and shelter new plants from hot dry wind while the canopy fills.
