Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Rough Shelled Macadamia - Macadamia tetraphylla
The rough shelled macadamia is the more southern of the two commercial species, native to the rainforest border country of northern New South Wales and far southeast Queensland. Macadamia tetraphylla is easily told apart: leaves are carried in whorls of four with distinctly prickly margins, new growth flushes bronze pink, and the flower racemes are pink rather than cream. Its nuts have a rougher shell and higher sugar content, which is why they caramelise so well when roasted.
Why the Rough Shelled Macadamia
Nut quality: Higher sugar and oil content gives a richer nut that roasts and caramelises particularly well.
Pink racemes: Long pendulous pink flower chains in late winter and spring, more showy than the cream flowered species.
Cool tolerance: Of the two species this is the one better suited to cooler subtropical and warm temperate districts.
Foliage character: Whorls of four prickly leaves with bronze pink new growth give the canopy real texture.
Pet caution: Macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs, so consider where fallen nuts will land.
Ideal Applications
Productive shade tree: A broad canopy that shades a yard and yields a serious annual harvest.
Native rainforest planting: A genuine Australian rainforest species for a restoration or bush garden.
Boundary screen: Its density makes an effective evergreen screen at generous spacing.
Cross-pollination partner: Planted near another macadamia it lifts nut set on both trees.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 7 to 10m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring through early autumn, avoiding frost
Soil & Drainage: Deep well drained slightly acidic soil high in organic matter, intolerant of waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly through the first two summers and maintain a thick mulch layer over the fine surface root mat at all times. Feed with a low phosphorus native fertiliser, stake and shelter young trees from wind, and protect from frost for the first few winters.
