Kews Surprise Magnolia - Magnolia campbellii ‘Kews Surprise’
This is the big one. Magnolia campbellii ‘Kews Surprise’ carries enormous cup and saucer flowers in deep rose pink, up to 25cm across, on completely bare branches in late winter, and it does it on a tree that will eventually stand as tall as a house. Grafted plants flower far younger than seedlings, but it remains a tree for someone prepared to give it room, shelter and time.
Why Kews Surprise Magnolia
Flower Scale: The blooms are among the largest of any hardy tree grown in Australia, and they open before any foliage appears.
Bare Wood Display: Flowering on leafless branches in August and September makes the display unmissable against a winter sky.
Frost Risk: Open blooms are ruined by a late frost or a hard wind, so shelter and an aspect that warms slowly matter more than anything else on the site.
Ultimate Size: This is a forest scale tree. Allow at least 8m clear in every direction and keep it away from house eaves and services.
Cool Climate Requirement: It performs in the Southern Highlands, the Blue Mountains, the Dandenongs, the Adelaide Hills and Tasmania, not in warm coastal gardens.
Ideal Applications
Estate and large garden feature: A mature specimen in flower is the single event of the winter garden.
Sheltered lawn specimen: Placed against a dark evergreen backdrop, the pink flowers read at full strength.
Cool climate arboretum planting: A collection tree for gardens with the space and the climate to do it justice.
Woodland garden: Grown at the edge of high canopy where taller trees break wind and frost without shading it out.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedging plant, allow 8m clear around it
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 12m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring, while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, humus rich, moisture retentive, acid to neutral and well drained; the fleshy roots resent both waterlogging and disturbance
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first three summers, since drought stress at this stage delays flowering for years. Mulch widely with leaf litter, never cultivate or dig over the root zone, and keep the trunk clear of mowers and whipper snippers as the bark is thin and damages easily.
