Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Cleopatra Magnolia - Magnolia ‘Cleopatra’
‘Cleopatra’ is one of the deep-toned deciduous magnolias, opening tulip-shaped blooms in a rich reddish purple on bare branches in early spring. Compared with the older Magnolia hybrids it stays compact and upright, which puts a full-sized magnolia flower on a tree that fits a courtyard or a suburban front garden. Flower colour is strongest in cooler districts and on young wood, and the display comes before any leaf appears, so nothing competes with it.
Why Cleopatra Magnolia
Deep Purple-Red Blooms: A far richer tone than the pale pink and white magnolias that dominate Australian gardens.
Compact Upright Growth: Stays narrow and manageable, so it does not need the space a soulangeana demands.
Bare Wood Flowering: Flowers open before leaf break, putting the whole display on show against the branch structure.
Long Bud Season: Silvery furred buds are visible through winter, giving interest well before the flowers open.
Small Garden Scale: One of the few magnolias genuinely suited to a courtyard or narrow side garden.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard Focal Point: The restricted footprint makes it viable where a larger magnolia would fail.
Entry Garden Specimen: Positioned by a doorway the flowers are seen at close range, which is where the colour reads best.
Mixed Border Anchor: Sits behind hellebores and spring bulbs that flower at the same time.
Large Container Growing: Its compact habit suits a substantial pot on a cool-climate terrace.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn through winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Rich, moisture-retentive, free-draining soil, slightly acidic; magnolias will not tolerate lime, compaction or waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers, since magnolias are shallow rooted and dry out faster than their appearance suggests. Mulch to 100mm with compost or leaf litter but keep it off the trunk, and never cultivate or dig within the root zone because the surface roots are easily damaged.
