Felix Jury Magnolia - Magnolia ‘Felix Jury’
The flowers are the largest of any magnolia commonly grown in Australia, and that is the entire argument for planting it. Magnolia ‘Felix Jury’ carries deep rose red goblets up to 25 to 30cm across on bare branches in late winter, thick petalled, lightly fragrant and heavy enough to nod on the stem. It was raised in New Zealand by Mark Jury and named for his father, and it flowers young, which is unusual for a magnolia of this size.
Why Felix Jury
Flower Size: Blooms reaching 30cm across, on a scale that stops people in a garden.
Colour Depth: A rich rose red on the outside of the tepals, deeper than the soft pinks of the older hybrids.
Early Performance: Flowers from a young age rather than making you wait a decade for the first display.
Fragrance: A light sweet scent noticeable in still weather beneath the tree.
Upright Habit: Grows as a manageable narrow crowned tree, so it fits a suburban garden despite the size of the flowers.
Ideal Applications
Front Garden Statement: A single tree carrying the whole late winter display near the entry.
Sheltered Courtyard: Walls protect the large flowers from wind damage and reflect warmth.
Woodland Edge: Planted at the margin of taller trees with the crown in full light and the roots in cool shade.
Cool Climate Feature: Excellent in the Adelaide Hills, Dandenongs, Blue Mountains, Tasmania and the southern tablelands.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m in a row, though it is grown as a specimen rather than a screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or late winter, ideally before bud break
Soil & Drainage: Deep, rich, moisture retentive but free draining soil, slightly acid. Improve sandy or clay soils heavily with compost before planting
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers and never let the root zone dry out completely, as magnolias respond to drought stress by shedding leaves and dropping the following season's buds. Mulch to 75mm across the whole root area and never dig or cultivate beneath the tree, since the fleshy surface roots are easily damaged. Choose a position sheltered from strong wind so the large flowers are not bruised as they open.
