Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Ballerina Magnolia - Magnolia x loebneri ‘Ballerina’
‘Ballerina’ is one of the fullest flowered Loebner magnolias, opening around thirty narrow tepals per bloom so each flower reads as a soft white rosette rather than a goblet. Magnolia x loebneri ‘Ballerina’ flowers on bare wood in late winter to early spring with a light honey fragrance, and it starts flowering while still young. It stays smaller and more rounded than a saucer magnolia, which is what makes it workable in a courtyard.
Why Ballerina Magnolia
Many-Petalled Bloom: Roughly thirty slender tepals give a fuller, softer flower than the six or nine tepals of most magnolias.
Flowers Young: Unlike some magnolias that sulk for a decade, this one blooms on small plants.
Fragrance: A light honey scent carries on still mornings in late winter.
Rounded Compact Crown: Broad and bushy rather than tall, so it does not outgrow a small garden.
Cool Climate Reliability: Loebner hybrids are among the hardiest deciduous magnolias and set bud dependably in southern Australia.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard Feature: Small enough to be the single specimen in a paved or walled garden.
Lawn Specimen: The rounded silhouette and bare winter branch structure both read well in open turf.
Woodland Edge: Happy in the light shade at the margin of taller deciduous trees.
Entry Statement: Planted as a matched pair either side of a gate or path it gives a strong late winter arrival.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedging plant, allow at least 3m between trees in a row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to late winter while dormant, or early spring in cold districts
Soil & Drainage: Moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic and free draining. It dislikes lime, compaction and dry sandy soils that bake in summer
Establishment Care: Water deeply through the first two summers, as magnolia roots are shallow and fleshy and dry out fast. Mulch generously with composted material and never cultivate or dig around the root zone, since surface root damage causes lasting setback.
