Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Leonard Messel Magnolia - Magnolia x loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’
Where the big goblet flowered magnolias can look heavy, Magnolia x loebneri 'Leonard Messel' flowers in a loose scatter of narrow strap petals, lilac pink outside and near white within, opening from furry buds in late winter. It is a cross between the star magnolia and the kobushi magnolia, giving it the star magnolia's petal count with far more vigour and a small tree rather than shrub scale. Its slightly later bud break also means it dodges frost damage more often than the earliest magnolias.
Why Leonard Messel Magnolia
Petal Form: Around a dozen narrow strap petals per flower give a starry, informal outline.
Later Bud Break: Opens after the very earliest magnolias, so late frosts spoil the display less often.
Multi Stem Habit: Naturally branches low, which suits an informal garden better than a clean standard.
Cold Hardiness: Genuinely tough in cool temperate Australian conditions including highland frost.
Modest Scale: Stays small enough for a suburban block without regular reduction pruning.
Ideal Applications
Small Garden Feature: Big flowering impact from a tree that stays under 6m.
Woodland Edge: Sits well at the boundary between lawn and taller deciduous canopy.
Entry or Courtyard: Multi stemmed structure gives interest at close range through winter.
Bulb Underplanting: Daffodils and bluebells beneath it flower at the same time.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3.5m in a planted row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Winter dormancy, roughly June to August
Soil & Drainage: Humus rich, moisture retentive, slightly acid to neutral soil with free drainage, in a position sheltered from strong wind that shreds the petals
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first two summers and mulch 75 to 100mm deep over the root zone. Do not dig or cultivate beneath the canopy, and restrict pruning to removing damaged wood straight after flowering.
