Peppermint Stick Magnolia - Magnolia ‘Peppermint Stick’
Flowering on bare wood in late winter and early spring, Magnolia ‘Peppermint Stick’ opens tall goblet blooms whose outer tepals carry a rose-purple stripe running the length of a white ground, which is where the name comes from. It holds a more upright, gathered shape than the spreading saucer magnolias, so it suits a garden where a big magnolia moment is wanted but the footprint is limited. Choose it over a common soulangeana when the flower needs to be narrower, taller and more sculptural.
Why Peppermint Stick Magnolia
Striped Tepals: Each bloom shows white inside and a clear rose-purple band outside, so the tree changes character as the flowers open.
Bare Wood Display: Flowering happens before the leaves expand, which puts the whole show against sky and branch structure rather than foliage.
Upright Frame: Growth is narrowly upright while young and broadens slowly with age, useful where a spreading crown will not fit.
Large Summer Leaves: Broad mid green leaves give solid shade through the warm months and turn buttery yellow before falling.
Cool Climate Reliability: A genuine cold winter sharpens the bud set, so it performs best in the southern and highland districts.
Ideal Applications
Entry Courtyard Feature: One plant beside a doorway carries the whole garden through the last weeks of winter.
Small Formal Lawn: The tidy upright frame reads well as a single specimen with clean turf beneath.
Winter Interest Border: Pairs with hellebores, snowdrops and early bulbs planted through the root zone.
Sheltered Terrace Planting: Wind protection preserves the flowers, so a walled terrace suits it well.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a loose informal row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Winter and very early spring while the tree is dormant
Soil & Drainage: Moist, humus rich and slightly acidic, well drained; magnolias resent waterlogging and dry out badly in shallow sand
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first two summers and mulch to 75mm to keep the fleshy surface roots cool. Do not dig or cultivate under the canopy, and shelter the plant from hot dry wind which browns the opening flowers.
