Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Star Wars Magnolia - Magnolia ‘Star Wars’
‘Star Wars’ is a New Zealand-raised cross between Magnolia campbellii and Magnolia liliiflora, and it took the enormous flowers of the first parent and made them appear on a young, garden-sized tree. The blooms are deep rose-pink, up to 250mm across, opening from tall pointed buds on bare branches from late winter and continuing over an unusually long season. Unlike a seedling campbellii, which can take fifteen years to flower, this one performs while still small.
Why Star Wars Magnolia
Flower size: Among the largest blooms of any magnolia that will flower in a domestic garden.
Early to flower: Blooms as a young tree rather than after a decade of waiting.
Extended season: Flowering runs over many weeks from late winter, with scattered later blooms on established trees.
Vivid colour: Deep rose-pink outside, paler within, so the display shifts as the flowers open.
Manageable tree: Reaches a size suited to a suburban front garden rather than an arboretum.
Ideal Applications
Front garden statement tree: The single most visible plant on the property for two months of the year.
Lawn specimen: Given open ground and a dark backdrop the flowers carry from the street.
Cool-climate gardens: Suits Victoria, Tasmania, the Adelaide Hills and the NSW tablelands.
Formal entry planting: A matched pair either side of a drive is a strong late-winter effect.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not suited to hedging; allow 4m if repeated in a row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn to winter, while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, rich, slightly acidic and free draining, with plenty of organic matter. Shallow fleshy roots mean it fails in compacted, waterlogged or very dry soils.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly through the first two or three summers and never let the root zone dry out in a heatwave. Mulch thickly but keep it off the trunk, avoid cultivating within the root area, and choose a position sheltered from spring wind that would strip the open flowers.
