Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Royal Star Magnolia - Magnolia stellata ‘Royal Star’
‘Royal Star’ is the star magnolia scaled for a real garden. Furry grey buds open in late winter to white flowers with 25 or more narrow strap shaped tepals, lightly scented, carried on bare wood before a single leaf appears. Magnolia stellata ‘Royal Star’ builds a rounded multi stemmed shrub rather than a tree, so it fits under eaves and beside paths where the larger magnolias cannot go.
Why Royal Star Magnolia
Bloom Timing: It flowers in late winter to very early spring, ahead of almost everything else in a cool climate garden.
Flower Form: The many narrow tepals give a shaggy star shape quite unlike the tulip form of the larger magnolias.
Compact Habit: Mature size stays within a small garden, and the multi stemmed frame is attractive bare in winter.
Frost Caution: The buds are hardy but open flowers brown in a late frost, so an east facing spot that warms gradually is safer than a hot western wall.
Slow and Steady: Growth is slow, so the shape stays predictable and it rarely needs corrective pruning.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard feature: Its size suits an enclosed space where the scent gathers and the flowers are seen at close range.
Winter interest at an entry: Planted near a door it flowers when the rest of the garden is doing nothing.
Shrub border backbone: It provides height and structure among rhododendrons, hellebores and other acid lovers.
Large container: In a cool climate it will hold in a big pot for years in an acidic, moisture retentive mix.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Informal group at 2 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Humus rich, moisture retentive, acid to neutral and well drained; add compost at planting and avoid lime entirely
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist through the first two summers, as it wilts quickly in dry heat and drops leaves early if stressed. Mulch to 75mm with leaf litter kept clear of the stems, and prune only to remove crossing wood, immediately after flowering finishes.
