Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Genie Magnolia - Magnolia ‘Genie’
‘Genie’ was bred in New Zealand and has become the standard choice where a deciduous magnolia is wanted in a small space. The flowers are the drawcard: deep maroon to burgundy-black goblets, richer in colour than almost any other magnolia, opening from late winter on bare wood and often repeating with a lighter flush in summer. The plant stays compact and columnar, which is why it turns up in courtyards and narrow front gardens where a Magnolia x soulangeana would be far too wide.
Why Genie Magnolia
Colour depth: Dark burgundy-maroon flowers, substantially deeper than the pink and purple magnolias.
Compact habit: Narrow and upright, fitting garden beds only two metres wide.
Repeat flowering: A main late-winter display followed by scattered blooms into summer on established plants.
Precocious: Flowers heavily from a young age, so the display starts in the first seasons.
Container tolerance: Small enough to hold long term in a large planter.
Ideal Applications
Narrow courtyard beds: The upright habit suits planting strips too tight for a spreading magnolia.
Feature pots: Performs in a large container on a terrace or entry.
Small front gardens: Provides a full magnolia display on a modest urban block.
Repeated accent planting: Set at intervals along a path or driveway for rhythm.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m for a loose row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn to winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Rich, slightly acidic, free-draining soil with generous organic matter. Avoid heavy waterlogged clay and highly alkaline ground, both of which cause poor growth and yellow foliage.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers, particularly in the pot-grown situations this cultivar often ends up in. Mulch with composted bark clear of the trunk, do not cultivate over the shallow roots, and prune only lightly after flowering if shaping is needed.
