Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Cascading Bean - Maniltoa lenticellata
Everything about Maniltoa lenticellata is ordinary until it flushes. New growth emerges as limp, pale, tissue thin tassels that hang from the branch tips like dropped handkerchiefs, cream to palest green, before slowly stiffening and darkening to the glossy deep green of the mature canopy. Between flushes it is a dense, well behaved shade tree from north Queensland rainforest, which is exactly why it works in a garden: reliable structure with an extraordinary event several times a year.
Why Cascading Bean
New Growth Display: The hanging pale flushes are unlike anything else in cultivation and appear repeatedly through the warm months.
Canopy Density: Mature foliage is dark, glossy and tightly packed, giving heavy shade and good screening.
Moderate Size: It stays within suburban scale rather than reaching the height of the big rainforest emergents.
Clean Habit: Fine, low litter foliage and a non aggressive root system make it usable near paving and pools.
Shade Adaptable: As a rainforest species it grows happily in part shade as well as open sun in humid districts.
Ideal Applications
Tropical feature tree: Placed where the flushes can be seen against a dark background or the sky.
Poolside and courtyard shade: Its clean habit and dense head suit paved entertaining areas.
Tall evergreen screen: Planted in a row it makes a solid rainforest wall along a boundary.
Understorey to canopy planting: Slots beneath taller trees in a layered tropical garden scheme.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3.5m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 7m centres
Best Planting Season: Early wet season in the tropics; spring to summer in frost free subtropical gardens
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moist, humus rich soil with free drainage; it needs organic matter and dislikes dry compacted ground
Establishment Care: Keep the soil evenly moist through the first two years with deep watering two to three times a week in dry weather. Mulch heavily to 100mm to hold humidity around the root zone, and shelter young plants from cold wind and any frost.
