Prickly Paperbark - Melaleuca styphelioides
Few Australian trees cope with the full range of suburban soil abuse as calmly as Melaleuca styphelioides, which will sit in a winter-wet clay corner one season and shrug off a dry summer the next. It builds a dense rounded crown over a trunk of soft, layered cream paperbark that peels in sheets, giving year round trunk interest at eye level. The tiny leaves finish in a sharp point, which is where the common name comes from, and they read as a very fine texture from a distance.
Why Prickly Paperbark
Bark Character: The pale, spongy, multi-layered bark is the feature, and it develops young enough to matter on a semi-mature planting.
Wet Feet Tolerance: It grows naturally along creek flats and swamp margins, so periodic waterlogging that would kill most ornamental trees does not trouble it.
Crown Density: Growth is thick and twiggy rather than open, so it screens and casts real shade instead of dappling.
Summer Flowering: Creamy white bottlebrush spikes cover the canopy through summer and pull in honeyeaters and native bees.
Urban Durability: Compacted soil, root-zone paving and coastal wind are all handled well, which is why it is a standard council street tree from Brisbane to Melbourne.
Ideal Applications
Driveway and street avenue: Planted in a repeated row it gives a uniform, mid-sized canopy with a trunk worth looking at.
Wet or low-lying ground: Use it in the part of the block that stays soggy after rain where other trees have failed.
Boundary screen: Closer spacing produces a tall, dense evergreen wall of foliage between neighbouring properties.
Habitat and bee planting: A reliable summer nectar source for gardens designed to feed birds and pollinators.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring in temperate zones, any time of year in frost free subtropical areas
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable across sand, loam and heavy clay, tolerant of periodic inundation and mildly saline coastal soils, no special drainage works required
Establishment Care: Give a deep soak once or twice a week through the first two summers rather than frequent light watering, so roots chase moisture downward. Keep a 75mm coarse mulch layer clear of the trunk and hold off nitrogen fertiliser in year one.
