Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Blush Little Evodia - Melicope rubra ‘Blush’
‘Blush’ is the softer toned selection of Melicope rubra, carrying pale pink flower clusters where the standard form is a deeper rose red. Everything else that makes the little evodia valuable stays the same: flowers borne directly on the trunk and older branches, glossy three-part leaves, a slim upright frame, and its role as the larval food plant of the Ulysses butterfly. The paler flower makes it easier to combine with white, cream and silver planting schemes in tropical gardens.
Why Blush Little Evodia
Pale flower tone: Blush pink clusters sit more quietly in a planting scheme than the vivid red of the standard form.
Trunk borne blooms: Flowers emerge from the trunk and mature wood, putting colour at standing eye level.
Butterfly host: It supports the full life cycle of the Ulysses butterfly, not just visiting adults.
Compact rainforest form: The narrow canopy and modest height suit small tropical courtyards and side gardens.
Filtered light tolerance: As a rainforest understorey species it performs in dappled shade where flowering exotics thin out.
Ideal Applications
Small tropical courtyard: Its slim habit means it can be placed within a couple of metres of a wall or fence.
Wildlife corridor planting: Included in a native mix it adds a specific and uncommon butterfly resource.
Layered rainforest bed: It fills the middle storey beneath taller canopy trees in a mixed native garden.
Soft colour scheme: The blush flowers work with white gardenias, cream cordylines and silver foliage plants.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Early wet season in the tropics, spring in frost free subtropical gardens
Soil & Drainage: Deep, organically rich, moisture retentive soil with free drainage. Poor sandy ground and compacted clay both limit it badly.
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone damp with two or three waterings a week through the first dry season, easing back once the tree is clearly growing away. Mulch thickly with leaf litter, protect young plants from hot afternoon sun and strong wind, and avoid insecticides entirely if you want the butterflies the tree is grown for.
